What happens in the event of a three way tie between BYU, SC and Stanford
if they all finish 6-6 (with each protecting its home court against the others)?
BYU would have to lose to Grand Canyon, the worst team, so BYU will likely win, finishing 7-5. Stanford is 5-6, but has Grand Canyon, so they're likely to finish 6-6. The interesting question is USC. USC is 6-4, but plays the top two teams, UCLA (home) and Pepperdine (road). I think USC loses to Pepperdine in Malibu. The UCLA game is another question. USC is undefeated at home, but UCLA beat them 3-0 on their home court (though USC scored in the 20s in all three sets).
If USC loses to both, the tie breaker is head to head wins against the tied teams. The teams are 1-1. Next tiebreaker is sets. The teams are 5-5. The third tiebreaker is points scored divided by points allowed in the matches. That favors Stanford, who collectively scored 218 points against USC's 212 points in the two matches. Nine of the ten games were very close. In the first game at Stanford, USC lost 25-15. There's the difference.
Therefore, USC must beat either Pepperdine (unlikely) or UCLA to assure themselves of the playoff, if BYU beats Grand Canyon as expected. Games are this upcoming Thursday and Saturday.
