LSU’s Nathan Jeansonne and South Carolina’s Ryan Hall each received three-shot penalties for missing three of the four checkpoints in Friday’s opening round. South Carolina subsequently missed the cut yesterday by 2 shots.
Tell us about that aspect of the college game. I wasn't aware that they had to meet time limits on their play. It makes sense. How does it work? How much faster than "normal" must they play? Is the time allocation generous?
Quote:For much of the season, pace of play is loosely enforced in college golf. There are no checkpoints. There is no timing. No penalties are handed out. But when the postseason begins, things are different. Penalties are handed out after the second missed checkpoint.
Based on the difficulty of the course, the organizing committee determines a pace of play. At the NCAA tournament, they set 4 checkpoints for elapsed time from the start of the round. The overall pace of play for Blessings is set at 5 hours, 5 minutes, the longest ever which factors in the challenges on the course as well as the distance between holes. I think that each group also has a monitor or rules official that times the players as they play each shot. A player should not take longer than 45 seconds.
The article that I read indicated that pace of play picked up significantly yesterday after the slow play penalties had been imposed.
