One other note about Snyder. He was assessed a one shot penalty for slow play on Saturday. 

LSU’s Nathan Jeansonne and South Carolina’s Ryan Hall each received three-shot penalties for missing three of the four checkpoints in Friday’s opening round. South Carolina subsequently missed the cut yesterday by 2 shots.

Tell us about that aspect of the college game.  I wasn't aware that they had to meet time limits on their play.  It makes sense.  How does it work?  How much faster than "normal" must they play?  Is the time allocation generous?

There are four checkpoints during each round - after 5/9/14/18. Two things are measured:
- Time of completion of the hole
- Time since the previous group finished the hole

Based on actual tee time, there will be a time on the clock by which they need to have completed a hole. That can vary by course - for NCAA regionals I believe it was 4h40m.

If you miss your time on the clock AND are more than 15 minutes behind the group in front of you, then you are deemed to have missed the checkpoint. First miss is a warning, second miss is one stroke, third is two strokes, and four is DQ. You can appeal the penalties after completion of the round. Typical reasons for appeal are waiting for a rules official or looking for a potentially lost ball. What is not OK is to have to go back to the tee because you didn't hit a provisional ball. Also, when a group misses a checkpoint, a rules official starts following the group and timing each player.

Snyder is a notoriously slow player so I'm not surprised he got penalized.
