I was at the game and it was both exciting and frustrating at times, especially without getting the benefit of replays and commentating to know what's going on.

Some of the high/lowlights:

• Two bad ump calls - at home and the catch in the outfield

Very surprising to me that these calls were not overturned on replay. Kinamon was quite clearly seen as safe at home on the camera from the first base side ... though he shouldn't have tried under the circumstances.

It was harder to tell on Stowers play in left field. It looked like a good catch, but the play was far enough from the nearest camera it was tough to be completely sure.

Two bad errors by our infield ends the night for Miller

Kinamon had a weird game, twice out on over-aggressive running, one called error, another could have been. But also some good at bats.
Tawa was also looking surprisingly uncomfortable at short, particularly on throws to first.

• Why did the FSU batter in the middle of his at bat go talk to his coach for about a minute (why did the umps allow it)?

The FSU coach was mad about the strike call right before. Of all the whining about ball/strikes, that was the one against Fresno that might have some merit. I'd say one bad call on a strike 2 throughout the course of the game is pretty good.

A coach can call a timeout on offense in college ball. So strictly that may have been within the rules. But clearly the point was to complain to the umpire without literally arguing over balls and strikes.

• During a Stanford at bat, the FSU infielders seemed to have a problem with the umps. Was there something commented on TV about this? 

While it was not 100% clear, it appears that the two Fresno outfielders were barking at the ump. That seemed to be the attempt by the umps not to toss them.

• We were aggressive on the base paths.

Occasionally stupidly so. But one has to take some outs if you're going to aggressively pursue extra bases.

• Play of the game for me was the double play in the seventh - strikeout and caught stealing.

At the time, it felt like a game saving double play.


For tonight, my guess is Fresno starts their ace Ryan Jensen on two days rest.
Harder to tell for Stanford, but I'd probably guess Palisch, with the whole bullpen on call.
