Apparently 2.89 is a record high GPA for the Texas Football Team. I mean, that's not a "bad" GPA, but it also doesn't sound remarkably high.
AT UT, 3.0 is B and 2.67 is B-. The fact that team GPA is improving is a definite plus.
UT had 10 players on the Big 12 2018 All-Academic First Team (GPA >= 3.20) and two on the second team (GPA >= 3.0 and < 3.20), so the majority of the rest of the team should be within a few tenths of the 2.89 average.
For comparison, Stanford placed thirteen players on the Pac-12 All Academic Team (7 First and 6 Second) where minimum GPA is 3.0. Stanford had another 28 Honorable Mentions, but not sure of GPA criterion.
Players accomplish this while having the equivalent of a full-time job, so I consider them deserving of respect.
Geaux Cardinal!
