So any idea that the Giants should trade for veteran players to bolster their roster for a Wild Card push this year would be insane. If they get younger prospects that catalyze improvement, that's fine.
Bumgarner and Smith are both Free Agents after this season. If the Giants want them and they want the Giants, they can both be re-signed and and get prospects for a couple 2-3 month rentals. It would be insane not to trade them even if the Giants are sniffing Wild Card contention.
I still want Miguel Andujar from the Yankees as my top trade asset. A 24 YO 3rd baseman on IL with torn Labrum in shoulder this year, with four years until he's eligible for Free Agency. Slashed .297/27/97 with a .855 OPS in his one year (2018) as a starter. The Yankees have a strong pen, but really need a starting Pitcher.
The Red Sox, Nationals, and Cardinals need bullpen help badly, and I'm guessing most other contenders do too, so Smith should fetch some intriguing prospects.
Not just Smith, but Dyson, Moronta and Watson are having terrific seasons as relievers. Even Melancon is doing okay - though his contract makes him untradeable on a dollar-for dollar basis. And Trevor Gott is 5-0.
I would only make trades for SIGNIFICANT value; e.g., a front line starter for Bum or Smith. I'd trade to get rid of Crawford, Panik and yes, Posey. Belt has a .799 OPS, about average for a first baseman, but he's .866 away from home and .714 at home. I'd trade his contract.
