My guess is Farhan wanted to trade both Bumgarner and Smith. But when they made a run, it made it almost impossible. So he bit his lip and made the best deals he could with his secondary and tertiary assets.
No one here is a bigger Giants fan than me. But I suspect when all is said and done they end up about 79-83. And that may be optimistic. I hope I’m wrong. But I don’t think so.
Farhan did the best he could with the hand he was dealt. He still has improved the farm system. But the inability to do what I’m relatively sure he wanted to is a setback in the rebuild.
Getting rid of Melancons contract may help if they want to take a shot at Bum long term. I’m hard pressed to think more than 3 years. And that won’t do it. They are somewhat boxed in.
