OK, as I have pointed out, by keeping both of them, they can extend qualifying offers. If they then don't sign them, they get compensating draft picks. So, by keeping them, they get "something". Is that better than what they could have got in a trade? I don't know, but your "something is better than nothing" argument is defeated by this fact.
