Their defense couldn't stop us at all, even WITH adjusting to the pass. And even if the line isn't amazing, Scarlett can actually push a pile. Bryce could get taken down with 1 arm, and repeatedly was.
In the first half, while they played with one safety deep and a run defense, we scored 28 points. In the second half, with them playing 2 deep, we scored 10 points. I would say they stopped us. Furthermore, the fact they had the opportunity to torch Barton was due to the fact we couldn't get enough first downs to keep them off the field. In that game, Scarlett ran 3 times for 5 yards. Love ran 6 times for 71 yards.
While I fully expect a lot more from Scarlett this year, I wouldn't say he was the solution against WSU in 2018. We needed to keep them off the field, like we somewhat did in the first half. Our defense wasn't going to stop them. The one time in the third quarter they did, we did nothing with it. End of story.
Sorry but I can't see Scarlett being a solution unless there's less than 5 needed for a first down. He's tough to bring down but is way too slow. He can't break away for a big gain.
That's also why when he's in the game I expect to see 8/9 in the box, and I hope to God that ShawVita uses him as a decoy as often as they run him. I think play action off him is going to be one of our best plays this year.
