Years ago, when the Stanford student body was voting on what the mascot/nickname should be after Indians was retired, President Donald Kennedy wouldn't allow Robber Barons to be on the ballot, even though it was a fairly popular choice at the time. Too demeaning to founders Leland and Jane was the reasoning. In the ensuing vote, circa 1981, no majority was clear, so Kennedy (later of bed sheets, yachts, and antiques fame), edicted that the color Cardinal was to be the official mascot and nickname.
With the current focus to rename streets and dorms away from Father Serra due to his treatment of native Californians (is Father Lasuen next, btw?), perhaps now is the time to re-evaluate Leland Stanford, as well. What would be more fitting than to be the Stanford Robber Barons? After all, that's exactly what the Stanfords were. Anything else, would be a historical whitewashing.
