So apparently Costello injured his right thumb on the first drive against Oregon. KJ said it was not an excuse and he simply had to be a gamer and be there for his team.

But at what point did it hurt the team? He was obviously not effective throwing the ball. 

Are Mills and West simply in no position to back him up?

This was my biggest wonder during the game.

Watching the game in the stadium I had no idea about his thumb but it was obvious something was wrong.  I thought that maybe he wasn't fully healed from his head hit.  After the first series in the 3rd quarter ended in another punt, my group agreed that we would sit KJ.  Mills might not have been better, but he wouldn't have been much worse.

But we didn't expect it to happen, since the only example we could think of Coach Shaw benching a starter for non-performance in the past 7 years was Hogan for Nunes.
