Mild head trauma in adolescents and adults who participate in contact sports damages the barrier that protects the brain from pathogens and toxins, according to researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Trinity College in Dublin.

If the results of their small pilot study hold up, the brain imaging technique employed by the researchers could be used to monitor athletes who’ve taken a blow to the head and determine when they’re safe to resume contact sports.
