“Plain and simple: there are surface level reasons I was kicked off the Stanford swim team, but I can tell you with certainty that it comes down to the fact that I am gay,” DeVine wrote.

I don't know the facts of the matter, but by glossing over "surface level reasons" he hurts the credibility of his allegation.  If the stated reasons for not inviting him back on the team are bogus, why not address them specifically and knock them down?
