At Stanford, when professors call attendance, they say John.

"Honestly, I still forget it's my real name," he said.

professor's take attendance?????  I don't recall that ever happening way back when....

Brings back bad memories from my childhood.  I was always call Marty, but my legal name was Marvin.  At the beginning of each school year in each class they would do a roll call.  I would cring as they called "Marvin" because I knew that I would be teased for weeks about my dorky name.

marvin makes me think of marvelous marvin hagler, who wasn't dorky at all.
