Giants update:
Giants have five free agents, Madison Bumgarner, Will Smith, Pablo Sandoval, Stephen Vogt and Fernando Abad. Bumgarner and Smith will get qualifiying offers (one-year salary worth the mean average of top 125 players), about $17.9 million.
Tony Watson has a $2.5 million option to stay, exercisable at 5 days after the WS.
Pillar had the fourth lowest OBP and the lowest walk rate in the majors. If he gets a contract, it will be in the $8 mms. to $10 mms. range. He had 18 walks in 628 plate appearances (and 9 HBP, most on the team). But he had 21 HRs, 3 triples and 37 doubles and -- bet you didn't know this -- he led the team in stolen bases with 14. He was third in the NL in range factor.
Franklin Labour, who is ranked the Giants’ No. 20 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is the best prospect to be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this winter. The 21-year-old outfielder has not played above Class A ball, but he posted an .855 OPS with 15 home runs in 72 games between Salem-Keizer and Augusta this year. Ryan Howard, Caleb Baragar and Jalen Miller will also be left exposed to the Rule 5 Draft if they are not added to the Giants’ 40-man roster by Nov. 20.
Giants have a (hopefully) resurgent Cueto, somewhat resurgent Samardzija. If they don't get Bumgarner, they might consider Hyun-Jin Ryu, Crawford's brother in law Gerrit Cole or Dallas Keuchel. Beede, Anderson and Webb are existing possibilities. Rodriguez regressed.
Meuelens and Wotus are interviewing for the manager job. Zaidi has 6-8 other candidates in mind. The Cubs, Angels, Pirates, Royals and Padres are seeking managers as well. Some names mentioned are Joe Maddon, Ron Washington, Raúl Ibañez, Mark Loretta, Eric Chávez and Mark Kotsay. Kuiper doesn't think it will be Maddon, who is one year older than Bochy.
Posey's bat has disappeared. Vogt's defense has disappeared. Time to elevate Joey Bart? He's been the hottest hitter in the Arizona Fall League, hit three HRs in first six games and thrown out five of seven SB attempts.
Giants pick 13th in the 2020 MLB draft. In free agency, Farhan says the Giants want "Power" and specifically players who have hit well at Oracle park.
Oddball stat of the day: Giants went 42-39 on the road, 4th best record in the NL and 35-46 at home, tying the 1985 team for the worst home record in team's history. Maybe the new ballpark configuration will help that.
