I immediately thought of the Fiasco Bowl because of the similarities. <snip>
I don't think there are that many similarities. In the Fiesta Bowl, the score was tied and Stanford had first down at the OSU 25 with 52 seconds left in regulation. Shaw ran Stepfan Taylor twice to get down to the 17 or 18 yard line, and Jordan Williamson missed the 35-yarder as time expired. He never had Luck take a knee. What else should Shaw have done? If Luck passes and the ball is intercepted, Shaw has forfeited a golden opportunity to win the game. In my opinion, it was good coaching decisions but poor player execution in that moment. And even still, the game went to overtime but OSU had the momentum and they simply outplayed Stanford.
The Chicago Bears, on the other hand, were down one to SD. Trubisky scrambled to the 21 yard-line then took a knee which lost about 3 yards. At the least, they should have done a QB sneak to not lose yards and maybe even get inside the 20. So, yeah, that one is a head-scratcher.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
