That's definitely a better question! It's a bit sloppy of a stat, but looking at single-digit final score differentials in 2018-19:
L 84-90 in overtime vs Kansas (that one hurt)
W 78-73 vs SJSU
L 65-74 vs USF
W 93-86 vs Long Beach State
L 70-75 vs Arizona
L 66-70 vs Utah
W 84-81 vs Cal
W 79-76 vs USC
L 61-62 vs UW
L 59-64 vs Cal
L 72-79 vs UCLA
So Stanford MBB was 4-7 in single-digit games last year. I've said this elsewhere, but I'll say it again: Haase demonstrated at UAB that he can coach successfully. The question is whether or not he can coach successfully at Stanford. I think he can, but for me to believe I need him to prove it this year. The conference is yet again weak in the middle and bottom, so a first-round bye in the conference tournament and NCAA tournament at-large bid are there for the taking.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
