Shaw says he knows a lot of people coaching in the NFL and they are not having nearly as much fun as he is (although possibly not now).
So I wouldn't assume the reason Shaw hasn't gone to the NFL is that he is content to wallow in mediocrity.

There have been times that I've wondered if Shaw is perfectly content at Stanford because he knows that his limited skill sets in recruiting, coaching, motivating, etc. would be forgiven at Stanford as they would nowhere else, AND because he knew he'd fail in the NFL immediately.  He's Stanford-smart enough to know that the Peter principle wasn't for him.
