Williams was having just as bad a day as Carrington in the first half, but Tara kept her in and she had a remarkable turnaround in the 2nd half. Would Carrington have gotten it figured out with more time in game? Tara knows a lot more than we do, and Tara's decisions ultimately worked.(11-18-2019, 06:28 AM)81alum Wrote: Carrington did not seem happy even when she was on the floor last night. Something was not right. Hopefully this was a one game aberration. She had the most amazing fourth quarter against Gonzaga a year ago--almost pulled it out for us.
Any chance there was something physical plaguing Di yesterday? Otherwise I don't understand keeping the heart of the team off the floor, even if she is having an off day.
Did anyone notice who Carrington was guarding in the first half? Maybe there were defensive issues? I did notice when D came into the second half she was guarding in the post and trying to deny them the ball.
I wish we could replay the game. Who had the task of guarding Jenn Wirth? We did an amazing defensive job on her.
A few tidbits from the post game press conference:
The Gonzaga coach was asked about their defensive success, especially in the first half. "We followed the game plan. Ball pressure was heavy so their ball handler would not have time to make decisions. We played good weakside defense. We have only a couple of very strong defenders but played good team defense."
Tara came out and noted several times that Gonzaga was "extremely aggressive and physical." In addition "we struggled from three." "We needed to take better shots. We won't win big games going 5 for 23." Asked about Carrington "It's hard when things aren't going your way, but I am proud of D" for handling the situation.
Asked about the start of the game, "Our team at first wasn't aggressive. We were taking long threes when we needed to go inside more."
