My bad, I misread the article:

Kathryn, along with another player’s 9-year-old sister, was an unofficial cheer leader.

I read it as, "Kathryn, along with another 9-year-old sister..."

I thought you may have misread it because pops kept reminding us of "older girls" throughout Kathryn's youth career . . .
