Richardson has nothing to lose by going into the portal. He knows, and has probably known for quite a while, that he would not see the field in a serious way at Stanford. This way, he can see if he can get a year of grad school paid for and possibly compete for a starting job. Nothing says he has to actually do this, he may choose to just go get a job or pay his own way to school next year. No harm in seeing if there is an offer out there.
