Chiney may be worth $2 million but the WNBA is paying her $119,500.  The top 30 men in the NBA all earn more than $30 million a year.
Ledecky is the best example of a female athlete who rivals some of the men for earnings.

The point is that almost no female athletes are delusional when they enter college into thinking that their college education is superfluous because of high earnings potentials in their sports.  A surprising number of men are.  And such men don't wind up at Stanford, since our biggest draw is the quality of the degree.

We are the university for bright, non-delusional athletes :P

I haven't read up on it recently, but I remember articles on the WNBA basically saying the players all make their money over seas (stories about teams owned by Russian oil barons throwing money at players and part of the job is to hang out with the owners. Nothing lascivious was implied in what I read). Playing in the WNBA has an opportunity cost but the players want to cultivate the US game and fan base and of course are happy to be in a country where they speak the language.

Throughout the season, announcers have mentioned multiple times that KP is graduating this term so she can pursue her professional volleyball career. I don't know how lucrative women's volleyball is, but I'd bet it tops out at a couple hundred K per year.
