I think that our message board community rings far too much impatience and not enough praise for this young work-in-progress team.I certainly agree with your sentiment. I am overjoyed at our current record and thrilled about the progress of our freshmen and sophomores in particular. They deserve great credit for adjusting to college basketball so rapidly. Among the highlights for me:
The GoStanford.com site has compiled a set of pretty revealing seasonal stats, with headings that can be tapped to rearrange the data numerically by player. There are several take-ways from the data—Lexie is our leading scorer and rebounder, the team has eleven players averaging double digit minutes this season, Hannah Jump is one of the five top scorers on the team, and five of our players are hitting 75% or better on their free throws. Follow the URL below and select "Individual." Composite statistics are available for both the entire season and for the conference play.

1) Lexie returning to her great early form.
2) Fingall's return to form after a devastating injury a year ago can also be added to the list of things for which we should be thankful.
3) Haley Jones' ability to give 30 minutes a game and fill a stat line--something that only a handful of Stanford WBB freshmen have ever been able to do. Despite her #1 ranking, this was not a given.
4) Hannah Jump's ability to hit threes that no one else would have the time to hit--to hit them accurately, and to already show moves that Karlie did not display until her Junior year.
What you may sense, though, is some fan angst about the rest of the season. We knew coming into the season that we were weakest inside and that Dodson had to show significant improvement and consistency for us to go far. And Carrington was possibly our most important returning player--she provided the energy and points needed to defeat Oregon in the Pac 12 tournament last year. The loss of those two makes it much less likely that we can compete with Oregon, and we may struggle with other Pac 12 and NCAA tournament teams if they do not come back.
It makes the difference between whether this is:
1) A rebuilding year in which our talented but green freshman class gets a lot of experience that will be beneficial in the future, or
2) A year in which we might reasonably be expected to win the Pac 12 regular season, tournament, and make it to the final four or beyond.
Fans always want more. The first alternative is actually a good one, but we of course want the 2nd. And there are growing signs that the second option will be very difficult to reach. I think we will know a whole lot more after the Oregon trip.
