Great statistical analysis, MT!  I especially appreciate the points/minute breakdown.  Quite revealing.  It might show how much we miss Carrington--although she got her points against weaker teams.   But as the assistant coaches have said over and over, the freshmen can play offense, the determinative factor is how well they can absorb the scouting report and use it to play defense.  It was very clear before the game that the inability to absorb the scout was what had held Prechtel back, but Tempie noted that this week "she really seems to be getting it."  Well, she went out and had one of her best games.

I could not help but compare the way Prechtel took the ball, back to the basket, defended by 6'7" Yue, and did a drop step to go around her and score--several times.  That was a freshman going around a taller redshirt senior.  Last week Belibi got blocked several times by 6'4" Darcy Rees.  Belibi would try to face up and shot right into the block.  She made one successful hook shot that reminded me of Brook the hook.  More of that!  Belibi has not been playing that long and I don't think she has yet developed all the offensive moves she needs to get around taller players.  But the coaches seem to think Belibi is further along on defense.  Prechtel improving her defense and Belibi improving her offense are their keys to more minutes and more success.

The Bears, who had struggled of late on offense, continued that trend. Cal scored only three points in the third period, the fewest ever in any quarter in program history.

“We had trouble putting the ball in the basket, and that’s been the case for a couple of games now,” said Cal head coach Charmin Smith. “It took a toll here in Maples, with who we were playing against, and the crowd and everything. We got a little quiet.”
