Hmm. Seems like Shaw is encouraging 5th year guys to really prove they want to be Stanford football players and that they will be key contributors. Makes sense, because if you want to root out guys who maybe were more interested in the degree than being football players, or are ones you would prefer not to have back to make room for younger players with more upside, encouraging 5th years to explore transfer options is the way to do it. You don’t single guys out so much by encouraging all 5th years to explore transfer options, and it’s easier to tell the ones you aren’t asking back they aren’t being offered a 5th hear, if they volunteered to go in the transfer portal.
And then there is whatever added residual recruiting benefit that comes from having a record of not hindering transfers in any way. The fact there are no Stanford transfer portal entries for non-grad transfers sort of speaks for itself.
