She is fun to watch but she pushes with her off arm on every possession. Never called. She needs that arm slapped back a few times. Cal was intimidated.
She also carries the ball like nobody's business. I know it is fairly common and very rarely gets called but it gives an incredible advantage and she does it in an extreme way. Love how she plays, don't get me wrong. Fantastic player and a joy to watch overall, but she does do a couple of things that should not be allowed.
It is a kind of vicious cycle. Players are allowed to do stuff like carries that give the offensive player an advantage. Defenses ramp up physicality to deal with tough offenses, which leads to offensive players doing more stuff like pushing off. And we get what we have now, lots of push offs, lots of defensive hacking and pushing, etc.
Been saying this for years [I've got proof! :-) ] And, before Sabrina? Kelsey Plum. I don't like it either, but it seems clear: the difference between really good and elite for that position, at least the way the refs are calling things these days, may be the ability to get away with those moves on a regular basis. In light of that, can we coach our guards to be able to do it?
Carrying is not called at any level these days. It’s also become commonplace to fend off using your off hand. High school on up. If you want a hoot - watch NBA games from mid 70’s. Completely different game. No threes, lots of passing cutting. Mid range jumpers. Low post still exists offensively. And players actually have their hand on top of the ball when they dribble. Jordan changed that.
