Actually, they are both correct.  This article states the number of hospital beds per 1000 population.  The other article I shared showed the number of critical care beds (ICU beds).  The US has worked hard to shorten hospital stays and send people home early, which is why the number of hospital beds has gone down.  However, critical care beds are another matter, and my guess is that they have been stable or rising.

Hospital closures has to be a factor in declining numbers, right?  I couldn't get an exact count, but it looks like we're losing about 10 hospitals per year in the US, mostly in rural areas.
