First, WHO guidelines since 2015 have recommended against geographic naming.

Second, geographic naming is often misleading. The "Spanish Flu" did not originate in Spain. Indeed, the first known case was actually in Kansas. (It got the name the Spanish Flu because Spain was neutral in WWI and so did not have a propaganda machine in place to launch a national campaign that everything was normal. As a result, news broke there first.)

Third, the "nefarious intent" is right in front of our faces. Trump wants to call it the China virus because it stokes his base's belief that everything bad is someone else's fault, especially when that someone else is foreign:

The evidence is literally in plain view. Calling it the China virus is a politically motivated effort by certain Republicans in order to shift the blame to China. I don't know how that isn't totally obvious to you.

Yeah, they’ve been a shining light in this whole debacle.

Call the virus whatever you want.  The root cause of this whole thing is that China had a problem and didn’t want to play with others. Despite protestations to the contrary on this forum, CDC and WHO tried to get involved, committing to send resources to the epicenter.  (Google “China deny CDC Coronavirus” and look for the NYT article dated 2/7/20).  The whole world is now paying a horrible price for China’s coverup and WHO’s complicity.

But, maybe pointing that out is ‘nefarious’, since it’s a given that Trump’s ineptitude is the real problem here.
