The good news is that mitigation works. Social distancing has meaningfully slowed the disease. But the reason we can't just let the virus wash over us is because then you get NYC level medical system collapse, and they would as well if they relaxed too much because they're not close to herd immunity.
If you mitigate for long enough that community transmission is near zero, then you will have a few weeks of lead time to shut down localized areas if numbers go up after you reopen. Track and trace with saliva testing and cell phone GPS tracking. Its feasible. Korea has been doing it.
