I posted about challenge trials the other day and had some messages with BC about them. I haven't read the posted article. They are interesting and probably have some potential to speed things up, but they are not a panacea. Probably the biggest problem is if you're only enrolling healthy 20-30 year olds, you don't know if the vaccine will be effective or safe for older patients or those with other comorbidities.
I think a challenge trial with several vaccine candidates could be useful in determining which candidates to proceed with more widespread testing. But it won't give you the data you need to feel good about giving this vaccine to a big population.
