Bolinas may be an exception to normal expectations. It is one of the most isolated towns in the Bay Area. They are famous for removing all signs indicating the direction to town and have never been very friendly toward outsiders. I have friends who live there and they reported some really strong community actions meant to ensure that only full-time locals are in town right now. They stopped short of putting boulders across the road to keep anybody from coming in or going out, but there were those who were considering doing just that on their own. Not sure what it means in the big picture but Bolinas is only the smallest of data points.
