I don't think it is generally true that the virus spreads by aerosols.

WHO is assessing ongoing research on the ways that COVID-19 is spread and will continue to share updated findings.
I think the evidence is that the dominant mode of transmission is via droplets. While I don't think we can exclude aerosols entirely (and it has been established that in certain procedures, like intubation, aerosols are generated), it doesn't seem to be the dominant form of transmission.
