Stanford recently gave up on expanding the undergraduate class sizes. Palo Alto and Santa Clara County made it impossible to get through the environmental impact hurdles.

I'm familiar with Stanford's struggles with the county over the GUP, but did they really give-up give up?  It was my impression that undergraduate expansion was an eternal goal that might fade as appropriate but never disappear.  I am not in favor of eternal growth (that's unsustainable), but making the Stanford experience accessible to more students surely isn't a bad thing.  Alas, infrastructure demands.
