Shaw knew that Rosen was a talent. He would have been the starter pretty rapidly if he had been at Stanford. Obviously Shaw did not think he was that coachable, and for a while at UCLA that proved to be true. Shaw, like many head coaches in the NCAA, doesn't like to change starters quickly, especially at QB. I don't think he's that unusual. Sometimes he turns out to be right, sometimes he's wrong.
