Yeah, the CEB predated the thunderdome, and once upon a time it had a fairly well-balanced spectrum of views, from Dennis on the far left to McGrath and Gerald on the libertarian right. My understanding was that the thunderdome was created so that certain individuals, who had proven somewhat disruptive to the main Bootleg board, could have their own playground to do what they wanted (hence the name). The voices on the left on the CEB started leaving before T-domers started visiting, but the quality of the discussion did fall further once they established it as their second home (I think this was sometime in late 2015/early 2016). I left sometime thereafter (and changed my password to a random set of letters and numbers that I would never be able tor remember, and logged out for good). I would periodically peek in to see what the discussion was like just to remind myself that hell no, I didn't want to recover my password.
I'm not a fan of censorship, but if someone makes having a discussion so unpleasant as to silent anyone who wants to have said discussion, is that not also a form of censorship? Since I'm not longer on TOS, IDGAF what the RJ and his corporate overlords decided, but I do have to say that I wasn't sad that the doc decided that the Cardboard wasn't a good fit for him some time ago when he made a brief appearance.
