When I think of Tempie's tenure as a Stanford women’s basketball coach, I am limited. I observed her external qualities firsthand — her easy-going nature, her ability to break down the strategy of the game, and her focus during critical moments of the game. Yet, to a larger extent, I have to intuit her internal effectiveness based on who has been recruited, how players performed at game time, and how the team stayed on task game after game.
We could all see that Tempie's temperament was consistently upbeat, that her enthusiasm was infective, and that she had a great sense of humor — all requisites for maintaining team moral. And she earned our praise — that spontaneous and resounding applause we gave her at the last chalk-talk seem to catch us all by surprise. I’m glad that we could give her that accolade, since we will not have a chance to show her our appreciation at a more formal celebration.
She will be sorely missed.
