I've been told NASCAR is like a religion in the south. Some of the race car figures probably do achieve near god-like status. So I wouldn't be surprised if the right person got ill (and suffered) that it would change the mindset of a lot of people.
That said, I'm not sure Jimmie Johnson has that sort of rabid fanbase. (but, I haven't followed NASCAR all that much since I tried Fantasy NASCAR around 15 years ago. haha. and the Bill Elliott years before that) He, and Jeff Gordon before him, both seem like more mainstream famous racers instead of say a Dale Earnhardt Jr (using contemporary drivers)
Further caveat...i could very well be totally wrong about each of these racer's impact. =)
And now for more talking out of my ... Is Clemson a school that "the south" would connect with? I know it's technically in the south and it's recently been a great football powerhouse, but just 10 years ago, Clemson wouldn't have been considered an influential southern school, would it? It's not in the SEC after all. =)
OK run wild over my comments.
