I am surprised that none of these article mention admissions. I just don't think the admissions breaks needed to have 12% of the Stanford student body play varsity sports was sustainable.
The level of the cuts suggest that this issue was being worked on by the AD for a long time. At some level I wonder if covid-19 and the money issues were really just a convenient excuse. Combine that with the fact that no students are on campus to complain and you have a great opportunity to make a decisions that you know you needed to make in any case.
