Swimming is one of what Bowlsby referred to as the "country club" sports, which he said Stanford will always do well in. The high educational achievement is correlated with the high socioeconomic level.

Curious...which of these sports would we consider to be "Country Club" sports?

Crew/Rowing
Fencing
Field Hockey
Squash
Sailing
Synchronized Swimming
Volleyball
Wrestling

For me, all of them but wrestling are country club sports.  Even men's volleyball falls into that category.  For women, it's the equivalent of football, and it's played everywhere throughout the country.
