This is an ominous idea.  And a bad look.

If Stanford does do an Olympic Village approach and segregate the athletes there, then how is that much different from having "regular" students attend remotely and have only student-athletes on campus?

On the one hand, I agree with you, and normally this would be awful, since Stanford bends over backwards to honor the idea that student athletes are students who also play athletics.  On the other hand, during these days, where "residential life" is basically a single with a high speed internet connection so you can go to virtual classes, and 50% of the campus is not going to be on the campus, it's much less of a big deal.
