another analogy: though many companies want to own all intellectual property developed by an employee, many universities, including stanford (and stanford med center) allow professors to take to market inventions developed in stanford labs. stanford gets a percentage.
i suspect that if athletes were permitted to market their own, say, t-shirts, and the university got a 20% cut, the university would make more $ than under the current system. like professors, the athletes would have the extra motivation to take initiative, be creative, find markets, etc.
