A couple of commentators have made the ironic point that the excessive amount of carbon dioxide the trees emit actually contributes to global warming.

Trees EMIT carbon dioxide??????? I would like to see a link to that. AFAIK, trees absorb CO2 and emit O2. The opposite really would be a news flash.

Living trees take in CO2 and release O2.  The C(arbon) doesn't go away, it stays in the living tree.  When the tree dies, it releases carbon as it rots.
