Living trees take in CO2 and release O2. The C(arbon) doesn't go away, it stays in the living tree. When the tree dies, it releases carbon as it rots.
True, but as a tree rots it doesn't release all it's carbon as CO2. Much of that carbon ends up in other, heavier compounds that are not greenhouse gasses. The rotten tree doesn't just vaporize IOW.
