It does seem that a quick "I'm sorry, I made a mistake" isn't that hard and usually helps things blow over.  We don't get much of that from politicians.  However it is tougher to do if you really do think you were set-up.  Seems like part of that is an easy question to answer -- Pelosi says she only took the mask off while washing hair and transferring to the chair.  Salon owner could easily release the rest of the tape and demonstrate Pelosi is a liar.  But if the rest of the tape only shows Pelosi wearing a mask then easier to understand that she is pissed-off.  But the right move would still be to call it a learning experience and say you are sorry.

I heard her being interviewed about it yesterday. What she actually said was quite close to your suggestion here. She complained about how it was a set up, but still acknowledged that she made a mistake, and took responsibility for having made that mistake.
