Bob Berry was U of Oregon's All-American quarterback, and played on the West team in the 1/2/1965 East-West Shrine game. This was back in the days when there was comparatively little media and almost no knowledge of the players. Bob was my dad's quarterback at Willow Glen HS in San Jose, and some former members of the WGHS team were sitting in my grandparents' kitchen after the first East-West shrine game practice. The conversation centered around the best players, and Bob said, "Well, they're all really good. But there's this running back from Kansas named Gale Sayers who is just unbelievable."
That all-star game had Dick Ragsdale, Jack Chapple and Bob Nichols from Stanford and Craig Morton and Jack Schraub from Cal. East had Staubach and Butkus among others. Game was played at Kezar. West won, 11-7.
