My son is in eighth grade, and I've mentioned elsewhere that the last 2 1/2 months of 7th grade were a disaster. Only two of his six teachers actually taught--the others assigned projects and check in once a week. Much better online teaching this year, although still not as good as in-person. The big issue for him is social interaction, but he is doing the pod-based education where he goes to a friend's house two days a week and the friend come to our house one day a week; still socially distanced with masks, but time for interaction during breaks and lunch. Also, his PE instructor tells them to exercise 30 minutes during class, so he goes on bike rides with his friends during that time.

As BC alluded, the big issue is with the K-6 students. Here in Santa Barbara County, a few private elementary schools have been given permission to reopen, and the pressure will be on the public schools to at least go to a hybrid model when we move from purple to red tier as early as next week.
