Let's make this a lot more simple...
There is a house on fire. Someone comes to put it out with water. Someone else comes and throws gasoline. The truth is the house would have been lost no matter what.
We, as people, are appreciative of the "water fighters" and even laud their willingness to respond. At the same time, we scorn those who throw gasoline.
IOW, the outcome isn't as important as the ability to try doing the right thing, or at least be perceived to be doing the right thing, based on the available evidence.
