South Dakota is not only leading the country in current Covid hospitalizations per capita at around 30 per 100k, I believe it would be one of the worst rates in the world if compared on a country basis (Czechia, in the news for a terrible outbreak, at around 30 also as of a few days ago). WSJ has a nice chart comparing per capita rates per state:
