Interesting that for all the talk about the tradeoff between fighting the virus and hurting the economy, a majority of economists think the economy would be better off now if we had fought the virus harder.

The US economy would be substantially stronger today if the state and local ‘stay-at-home’ orders had been more uniform and lasted longer in the first half of the year.

7% strongly agree; 42% agree versus only 7% who disagree (none strongly).

Also, for the second question

The economy will receive a substantial boost as soon as K-12 schools can be safely opened in person nationwide.

19% strongly agree; 63% agree.  Nobody disagreed with the statement.

It is good for prominent economists to start publishing their views on these things for the next administration to reference.

Wish the current administration would take a few notes too, but it doesn't seem like our current Commander-in-Chief cares too much about fighting the pandemic anymore.

Shrug on this whole "what if" speculation because any assumption/belief that the US would have ever been able to control the virus with track and trace like other countries strikes me as irrational and fanciful.

Isn’t COVID 19 a serious National Security Issue?  If it were treated as such, the US could/would mobilize as it has in other crises such as WWII, Sputnik, and the oil crisis of 1974. I agree that the US has become flabby since the feel good times of Reagan abpnd the end of the Cold War.

How could we be expected to sacrifice a few months of restaurants and football to save a hundred thousand Americans?
We NEED MAC football and Buffalo Wild Wings.

At least that is my impression as the drive-thru lines at the Starbucks in the OC have routinely been 10-20+ cars long all day long for months.  Just wish USA citizens had that type of determination to wear masks and socially distance.
