I personally witnessed (and heard) a purple faced Brian Kelly screaming at a kid as he was running off the field after a kickoff : “WHEN ARE YOU ACTUALLY GOING TO GROW A PAIR.”
Then there is the Seeberg case and the academic scandal involving a student trainer completing coursework for players and other issues of academic conduct.
ND should be embarrassed.
I'm an ND alumnus, and I totally agree with you re Kelly. So do most of the (now old) guys I graduated with (yes, guys; ND was all boys until class of '76). I am embarrassed by Brian Kelly. That doesn't mean I don't root for ND. I think we could win without sacrificing leadership and character. We have a big advantage for tradition and branding. But I'd rather have a 7-5 or 8-4 good team with a coach who stands for sportsmanship, leadership, character and integrity than 10-2 (we'll lose to Clemson next time around, and then in playoffs ... and I know we don't get 12 games this year, but just to convert to standard terms) with Brian Kelly.
Full disclosure: I root for Stanford, Oregon, and Notre Dame. I have degrees from all three. When they play each other I root for 1.) whichever has a chance for playoffs; or 2.) whichever is losing
